Today, fans have denounced the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in football, in spite of its superiority to the fading eyesight of middle-aged men.
VAR is being increasingly used in football, including its recent trial in the FA Cup, but fans have dismissed the technology, declaring it's 'far too logical' and will 'take the fun out of football'. One Chelsea fan had this to say:
"We don't like it at all. As if goal-line technology wasn't bad enough... Where's the fun if you can't chant 'the referee's a w*****' because an informed decision has been made based on irrefutable evidence?
"Think about the World Cup. What justification are we going to have when England aren't knocked out because of a dodgy decision, but simply because they're crap?"
Another fan asked: "Why do we need VAR when we have the eagle eyes of Mike Dean?"
